As well as the usual, and well known, prayers and links associated with the Mothers’ Union each
deanery within the Diocese of York will contribute a prayer on an annual rota. The prayer will reflect the
chosen month and any specific religious festival. Each deanery has compiled a brief paragraph about
their area as a way of sharing points of interest, particular concerns and ‘good news’.
Guisborough with Whitby deanery
comprises of 10 branches and is geographically set
from Redcar all the way down to Whitby.
Guisborough itself is a market town and was formerly
part of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Gighesbore is
recorded in the Domesday Book and the ruined
Gisborough Priory dates to the 12th centrury. The priory
and Gisborough Hall (16th century, demolished and
rebuilt) are spelt without the first U. Some other old sites
and names use that same spelling.
Saltburn is a seaside resort with a pier and the cliff lift is
one of the world's oldest water powered lifts. Saltburn
lists smugglers, Quakers, railways as part of its diverse
history.
Redcar and Coatham -a holiday resort and Zetland
lifeboat, the world's oldest surviving lifeboat
Dormanstown - Named after and built by the Dorman
Long iron & steelworks, the company that built the
Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Marske - Is mentioned in the Doomsday book. Marske
Hall is now a Cheshire home and the village is also
home to a museum named Winkies Castle which is not a
castle but an old cruck house!
Wilton - Near ICI, is a village noted for Wilton Castle
which, in 1536, was confiscated by the Crown from Lord
& lady Bulmer for their part in the Pilgrimage of Grace
uprising.
Boosbeck , New Marske and Loftus - Previously
ironstone mining communities, farming and for Loftus
Saxon princess relics.
Whitby is such a well known English town and the link
with Captain Cook is carried down from the north of this
deanery down to Whitby where Cook spent his
apprenticeship years - not forgetting Whitby jet, Abbess
Hilda and Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula!
All in all ..... A varied and interesting area which accounts
for why tourists flock to this part of the country...so come
and visit us!
Dear God
Guard our friendships: Encourage us that we may
encourage one another;
inspire us that we may inspire one another;
Strengthen us that we may strengthen one another;
Remember us that we may love and care for one
another.
Mary Sumner's Prayer
All this day, O Lord,
let me touch as many lives as possible for thee;
and every life I touch, do thou by thy spirit quicken,
whether through the word I speak,
the prayer I breathe,
or the life I live.
Amen
The Mothers' Union Prayer
Loving Lord
We thank you for your love so freely given to us all.
We pray for families around the world.
Bless the work of the Mothers' Union
as we seek to share your love
through the encouragement, strengthening
and support of marriage and family life.
Empowered by your Spirit,
may we be united in prayer and worship,
and in love and service reach out
as your hands across the world.
In Jesus' name.
Amen
